KB China Paints - Skin Tones
These are old-fashioned
China paints, similar to those used in the early days. Important: Do not
under fire china paints! They will either rub off or be chalky matte! Fire all
china paints to cone 018. If you wish to matt down a rose skin color, mix it
with Skin Tone # 1 (Rose Velours) - not with a matting agent - for a lovely
finish. China paints will look best on porcelain fired to maturity. Underfired
porcelain will result in chalky looking painting!
The
china paints listed in our shop can all be fired safely from Junior Orton
Cone 019 (about 690°C - 1279°F) to Junior Orton Cone 018 (about 730°C -1386°F).
Although some colors will also take a higher temperature, pink colors might
turn blueish when fired higher than cone 018.
None of the colors should be fired lower than cone 019. The color might not develop properly at that low temperature and rub off after the firing.
Skin Tone #1 Rose Velour
This is a pale true rose color with a hint of blue suitable for many dolls, both German and French. It counteracts quite successfully the creamy tone of some white porcelains. I recommend you apply 2 coats of color and fire in-between, as this method achieves a superbly even coat of color. Gives a fairly matt finish. Excellent for early French dolls and early German dolls with a very pale skin tone. This is a pale true rose color with a hint of blue suitable for many dolls, both German and French. Skin Tone #1G Rose Velour Glow
Same color as Skin Tone # 1, but with more shine. It can be applied over colored porcelain to achieve some depth and life to the often dead looking porcelain. You can mix equal parts of Skin Tone # 1 and # 1G to achieve a satin sheen and use it on early French dolls, lady dolls and pale German dolls (like early Kestner dolls).
Skin Tone #2 Deep Rose
A true rose color with no blue overtones. This one is everyone’s favorite and is most popular for French dolls like Bru and Jumeau dolls. Mix it with Skin Tone # 1 (Rose Velours) for a more matte finish (2 parts Deep Rose with 1 part Rose Velours – a wonderful finish!)A true rose color with no blue overtones. Skin Tone #3 Dark Chocolate
This is the exact color of dark chocolate and was formulated especially for dark skinned dolls. The paint is very easy to apply smoothly and results in a satin sheen, when applied as an overall wash. It can also be used to paint very dark, glossy brows. For a very smooth finish, apply a thin coat of Skin tone # 2 (Deep rose) first, then apply the required number of brown coats of color
Skin Tone #4 Blue Moon
A dark and intensive color with a strong bluish tone ideal for later German dolls (character dolls especially). The color “imitates” the greyish blue porcelain used commonly in German dolls which causes the dark blueish rose skin color. A very easy color to apply, resulting in a satin sheen. For a little less darkness, mix it 1 : 1 with skin tone # 2 (Deep Rose). Use 2 thin coats of color for best results
Skin Tone #5 Oriental
This color matches exactly the skin color of an Oriental baby. It is very easy to apply smoothly and results in a lovely satin sheen. Apply 2 thin coats of color for more depth and a very smooth finish.
